Good Morning Good Shepherd

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

The Good Shepherd Centre is a Toronto shelter that provides meals, clothing, overnight, accommodations, as well as programs that address addictions, health care and housing. The thinkGood. team has visited the Good Shepherd Centre a few times over the past five months, and it’s always a rewarding visit. Back in December, the thinkGood. team, family, and friends helped serve a hot lunch on Christmas Eve. The experience was so rewarding, that we knew we would be back. Team thinkGood. re-visited the Good Shepherd Centre on Family Day to help make beds, and sort through clothing donations, and most recently we visited to help serve an early (7am!!) breakfast. Through each experience, we’ve been humbled by the friendly clients of the Good Shepherd, and we always leave feeling re-energized and ready to keep doing the Good work that we do. If you ever find you have a few hours to spare, volunteering is one way to make sure your time is spent wisely. Trust us, it feels Good to give back!

Art for AIDS International

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

This past Friday April 9th, 2010 was the opening night for the Art for AIDS International Exhibit at the Gladstone Hotel on trendy Queen St. W.  While Art for AIDS is a well known international non-profit organization based out of London, ON this was their first exhibition in Toronto. The exhibit featured international artists, as well as unique works from students across the globe.

Art for AIDS International has three distinct goals:

  • to provide HIV/AIDS education and advocacy through art and youth programming
  • to provide financial support to organizations working with women and children in sub-Saharan Africa
  • to provide scholarships to children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend school in sub-Saharan Africa

Their unique workshops take place at schools in Africa and around the globe, where students are educated about the causes and effects of HIV/AIDS and are then invited to translate their insights into original collage artwork. Collages are then reproduced as limited edition prints and sold to the public with the proceeds directed to non-profit organizations in sub-Saharan Africa.

See the gallery below for a quick taste of what Art for AIDS has on display. For more information on the exhibit and the organization click here.

FACE-ing Prom

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Shopping is many things, to many people. Therapeutic, exhilarating, a recreational activity even. Okay, so that might be pushing it, but shopping for clothes is definitely something some people find a lot of pleasure in. The ever fashionable thinkGood. team likes to shop, but as always, we like to balance out what can sometimes be a vice, with an act of good. For example, on a seasonal basis, it’s a great idea to go through your closet to see if there are any gently used items you can donate to your local charity, or even take those unwearable items and turn them into cleaning rags.

For some of us though, shopping for clothes is anything but fun, and is actually a huge source of stress. As spring unfolds, many of Toronto’s high school students are preparing for graduation, and prom, a time for celebration. Imagine though, that instead of looking forward to attending your senior prom, you weren’t even considering going because you couldn’t afford a dress. Enter the Family Abuse Crisis Exchange or FACE, a unique non-profit organization in Toronto, that has partnered with Yorkdale Shopping Centre to collect gently used dresses for young women in need of prom dresses. The partnership between FACE and Yorkdale will also offer donors a chance to win one of three $500 Yorkdale Shopping Centre gift certificates!! FACE will be accepting donations until Monday April 26, 2010.

When they’re not helping girls glam up for prom, FACE distributes gently used business attire to women in need who are unemployed or underemployed. Helping empower women? Helping young women celebrate their achievements? We love what FACE is doing.

As always,
