This past Wednesday December 1 was World AIDS Day and people and tweeples the globe over added a little red to their ensembles and avatars to raise awareness about the global pandemic. In the NBA there was more red on the court than usual as players were outfitted in red warm-ups. The apparel featured the league logo and a silhouette of the legendary Jerry West wearing a red ribbon symbolizing solidarity with HIV-positive individuals on the front and a large ribbon on the back. Some players also wore red sneakers, headbands and other accessories in recognition of the day. Participation was not just sartorial however as video clips were aired promoting the league’s partnership with the Greater Than AIDS campaign, which you can watch below.
Another notable World AIDS Day campaign is from A. Keys’ organization Keep a Child Alive. Celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kim Kardashian and Alicia herself have declared themselves digitally dead and have vowed not return to the social media landscape until $1 million dollars has been raised.
Keep a Child Alive encourages us all to:
Buy Life. There is a profound difference between living and life. Living may extend time for another day. But life is far more than sleeping and waking. Life is more than merely existing. And, although it would be easier, life cannot be bought in a pill. That is why Keep A Child Alive buys more than just the pills needed to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.
