The only reason I’m half as informed as I am, is because I’m surrounded by uberly awesome people who keep me in the know. Be it music, food, art, or fashion I am so lucky to have family and friends who are naturally adventurous and  inquisitive.

Most recently, as in 30 minutes ago, I received a link to a website www.gapingvoid.com. Dragging myself away from the TV and magazine occupying my brain, my ADD was rewarded with quirky illustrations, and inspiring statements. Gapingvoid is the e-home of Hugh Macleod, artist and author of “Ignore Everybody: and 39 Other Keys to Creativity” .

MacLeod’s story goes a little something like this…

A struggling young copywriter, living in a YMCA, he started to doodle on the backs of business cards while sitting at a bar. Those cartoons eventually led to a popular blog – gapingvoid.com – and a reputation for pithy insight and humor, in both words and pictures.

MacLeod has opinions on everything from marketing to the meaning of life, but one of his main subjects is creativity. How do new ideas emerge in a cynical, risk-averse world? Where does inspiration come from? What does it take to make a living as a creative person?

Here are a few keys to creativity from the book Ignore Everybody:

The idea doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be yours.
Put the hours in.
You are responsible for your own experience.
Everyone is born creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten.
Everybody has their own private Mount Everest they were put on this earth to climb.
If you accept the pain, it cannot hurt you.
The best way to get approval is not to need it.
Never compare your inside with somebody else’s outside.
Sing in your own voice.

doGood. feelGood. liveGood.
