Hunger Banquet

A few weekends ago, team thinkGood. attended a hunger banquet put together by the Toronto Zen Centre. The event was put together in efforts to raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors without Borders, The Children’s Breakfast Clubs and Oxfam’s hunger relief campaign in Pakistan, all while raising awareness around the world wide crisis of hunger.

Fact: Every day, 24,000 people die of hunger, three-fourths of them children under five. In our country, too, people suffer from hunger. Each month, more than 700,000 Canadians receive food from a food bank.

The Hunger Banquet held at the Steelworkers Union Hall simulated the dining experiences of various economic groups and gave the dining audience a chance to see how unequally the world’s food is distributed. By random drawing Hunger Banquet guests ended up in one of three groups. According to their status, guests were divided into high, middle, or low income groups. The evening was very informative, and also noteworthy was the full vegetarian dinner with food generously donated by local organic farmers and food suppliers, and prepared by local chefs.
