Does anyone remember this PSA from Concerned Children’s Advertisers about the house hippo? Well, its definitely one of my favourite CCA ads and it’s a great example of raising awareness around media literacy. As you may or may not know, November 1 – 5 is National Media Literacy Week here in Canada, and as a blog that harnesses the power of the media for Good. we also recognize the importance of healthy media habits.
Media is such a huge part of our lives it seems our love affair with media begins almost at birth these days. With children watching tv before they can speak, teens with cell phones before they can afford to pay for them, and adults tweeting all the live long day, it’s hard to ignore the importance of media literacy; especially for our youngsters. Along with memorizing multiplications facts, and world capitals, we need to make sure the youth of today are able to understand, interpret and manage the media they are constantly bombarded with. At the end of the day they need to know what’s real and what’s fake! Most importantly, media literacy week recognizes that while technology has vastly changed our lives in many ways for the better, life is all about balance.
In celebration of media literacy week, thinkGood. hopes you find time to put down your cell phone a little more often, spend a little less time logged on to your computer, and spend a little more time with the ones you love….unplugged.
