Weddings are a celebration of a couple’s love and commitment to each other without a doubt, but if you’ve ever watched an episode of Say Yes to the Dress or Wedding SOS it often seems like an extravagance that can be financially debilitating! Now as my friends can attest hypothetically and in my imagination, I, like most girls, can dream up the best wedding ever!! From beach to fairy tale, multicultural to garden I can imagine them all, but like any other down to earth individual I don’t think I could ever spend tens of thousands of dollars on one day, and one dress.
Enter The Brides’ Project – a full service bridal shop that receives donated gowns from corporate sponsors and individuals and then re-sells the dresses to brides looking to make a difference. The Brides’ Project is a non-profit organization that supports charity organizations fighting cancer, and helps send children with cancer to summer camp. The Brides’ Project, run entirely by volunteers and located in downtown Toronto, also invites other vendors to join their network with the proviso of donating at least a percentage of their income from referrals to charity. Dresses in the boutique that have been donated by previous brides are called good karma dresses and are often accompanied with a letter from the bride to the bride. The CBC video here spotlights The Brides’ Project and tells the story of a mum who donated her daughter’s dress to the boutique after she passed away from cancer. The sale of her dress will help continue the fight against cancer, and will let the next bride who wears the dress feel Good about her purchase. After all it’s always about the greater good isn’t it? And that’s just what makes The Brides’ Project so special. Their strong belief that a wedding can make a huge difference in the social consciousness of society whilst still being a classy, elegant, budget conscious hallmark of the union of a couple makes The Brides’ Project so Good.

Great post! And this is so awesome. I don’t see why people feel the need to purchase expensive wedding gowns, wear it for ONE day, and have it cooped up in the closet for eternity. At least this way someone else can have a beautiful dress, and in addition to the nice dress, they will help out in the fight against cancer. Wedding’s are just ONE day events, and I believe that if you can afford a big bashful wedding then go for it, if not, spend wisely and save your money for the more important things in life…the necessities.
My brother and I had been just debating your very topic, he’s usually trying to prove me incorrect. Your current view on this is excellent and just how I truly feel. I recently emailed my brother this site to show him your perspective. Right after looking over your blog I book-marked and will be returning to read your messages!
