Last night, upon a friend’s suggestion (thanks Jason), we ventured into the city to experience what I was told to be the best organic greek fries I would ever taste. While searching through the menu at Magic Oven, for what we were anticipating to be a tantalizing experience, we couldn’t help but be entertained by the witty celebrity quotes that decorated the menu which included everyone from Tiger Woods to Julia Childs. Our favourite quote was” We are living in a world today where lemonade is made from artificial flavours and furniture polish is made from lemons.” We also appreciated that on their menu that they gave explanations for many socially responsible terms. For example, they gave an explanation on what sustainable agriculture is:
What is Sustainable Agriculture?
Sustainable agriculture is a way of life, rather than a technique mandated by a certification process. Its tenets include:
• producing high quality crops with minimal impact on the environment;
• conserving natural resources on, near and beyond each property;
• providing employees and ancillary businesses with living wages; and
• supporting research and education to reinforce and improve upon existing practices.
Included in the amazing menu, was the drink selection which I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had everything from organic house wines, to organic ginger ale, lemonade and even root beer. Might I just add that those were the best tasting root beers, lemonades and ginger ales we ever had. The ginger ale actually tasted like ginger, the root beer was clear and had such a clean taste to it, and the raspberry lemonade…well I almost had my drink stolen it was so good!
Upon suggestion from my friend we shared an order of the organic Greek fries. Note to self for the next time: get my own order! We tried a variety of dishes from free range organic chicken tandoori pizza, to chicken and spinach penne in a roasted garlic cream sauce. All of which were thinkGood. certified.
To end our meal off we had Magic Oven’s organic chocolate cake and creamy carrot cake. Who knew organic would ever taste so good! We at thinkGood. have this obsession with ending our meals with fortune cookies, but we were delightfully surprised to receive organic Granny Smith apples instead. I must say this experience was like no other. Very innovative, socially responsible, the customer service was awesome, shout out to our super friendly and helpful waitress Jill, and the food couldn’t have tasted any better! Check out Magic Oven’s Slow Food Philosophy and some pictures from the night below!
The Slow Food Philosophy
Slow Food principles include the belief that the food we eat should taste good; that it should be produced in a clean way that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or our health; and that food producers should be fairly compensated for their work. The movement is based upon this concept of eco-gastronomy.
• a recognition of the strong connections between plate and planet.
