MS Walk for the Cure

As the warmer weather approaches, so do the many runs, walks, climbs etc. for the many good causes that need donations.  I don’t know about you but I find it overwhelming trying to choose which charity or foundation to donate to as they are all worthy causes.  My suggestion is to pick one or two, if you cannot participate in them all, that peak your interest or has touched your life or someone you love.

On April 18th The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada hosts 160 walks accross Canada.  I personally have chosen to be in the Hamilton walk that morning, as a dear friend of mine has passionately dedicated her time and money in supporting this cause, and I want to help support her and her commitment.  She recently found out that one of her dear friends was diagnosed with MS at the age of 29.  When she told me this I was a little taken back as this is such a young age, and to date there is no cure.  With further research I learned that most are diagnosed between the ripe old age of 15-40.

“ Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system which is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks the myelin which is a protective covering wrapped around the nerves of the central nervous system.”

Did you know …

  • Canadians have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world.
  • MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada.
  • Every day, three more people in Canada are diagnosed with MS.
  • Women are more than three times as likely to develop MS as men.
  • MS can cause loss of balance, impaired speech, extreme fatigue, double vision and paralysis.
  • We don’t know what causes MS but researchers are closer to finding the answer.
  • Information in this post was found on the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada Website www.mssociety.ca
