The World Health Organization’s World Health Day Campaign starts today and runs until April 11th, 2010. They are challenging 1000 cities worldwide to change 1000 lives, and they want to collect 1000 stories that will represent the world’s commitment to improving our global health. They are looking for stories of urban champions who have taken action and have had a significant impact on health in their cities. If you or anyone you know would like to take initiative, get invovled and represent your city please visit the WHO website to get started.
For those of you who would like to participate, but on a smaller scale, have no fear. Often times many people think that making a difference in their health or the health of the ones they love is just too insurmountable that it cannot be done. Here are some things you can try this week that may help get you started without changing your life drastically.
- Try bringing last night’s leftovers for lunch instead of eating something from a box or fast food. It’s a lot cheaper and a whole lot better for you.
- When grocery shopping read the Nutritional Fact Label. If the percent of total fat, cholesterol and sodium are very high ex. 15 %, 23%, 18% you should probably put it back and look for something similar that has a lower percentage. If the fibre, proteins, and vitamin section has all zeroes beside them, that’s not a good sign either!
- Try eating as many fresh fruits and vegetables as you can.
- Avoid frozen or highly processed foods. Read the ingredients. My rule of thumb is if I can’t pronounce it I probably shouldn’t be eating it.
- When I feel like I’ve lost touch with some of my close friends we often go for walks. It provides a chance to talk, share, laugh and an opportunity to exercise my heart!
Let us know what you did to participate in World Health Day!
Until next time…….
